El Mojon is a lovely small community with real character on the edge of The Mediterranean Sea between Torre de la Horadada and the protected Nature Reserves and salt flats of San Pedro. El Mojon was once a fishing village, and the fisherman’s cottages still exist on the beach front. There is a mix of old and new properties here that co-exist perfectly well together – El Mojon has a calm, mature and serene felling about it. It is a ‘real community’ where a mixture of nationalities but mainly Spanish and English live permanently all year long, and is a particular favourite of the wealthy Spanish from Madrid who have their summer vacation homes located here. El Mojon is a place of ‘low rise’ properties (there are no tower blocks here) tastefully built with wide roads and open areas, parks and with an abundance of trees, with a few shops, bars, cafés, restaurants and a chemist but the focus of the community is the beautiful safe sandy beach where a few beach bars and restaurants are located. In fact although El Mojon is quite small there a number of beaches in El Mojon – (1) a wide sandy beach, a favourite with families (2) a narrow beach in front of the cafés and bars and (3) a ‘natural’ beach reached by wooden boardwalks built over the sand dunes and protected grasses, this beach being left as nature intended. Nature walks meander off El Mojon beach towards the Salt Flats and the Nature Reserves where an abundance of wildlife can be seen, of particular interest being the flamingos.

El Mojon is a place where you can become ‘a local’ if you wish to, where almost everyone knows everyone and a real community spirit exists, hence it is extremely popular with the Spanish – in fact a local Mayor has his summer residence here.

Close by and within walking distance of El Mojon are two large Spanish towns; Pilar de la Horadada and San Pedro offering everything, and more that one could need for day to day living, including large supermarkets, doctors, chemists, countless shops, diy outlets, a 24 hour petrol station, car dealerships and car service centres, numerous excellent restaurants that people drive for many miles to dine at, and a weekly open air market favoured by the Spanish as it is said to offer the freshest and cheapest produce in the area! There is even a bus station within easy walking distance and a luxury 5-Star hotel and spa is within 10 to 15 minutes walk. For boating enthusiasts there are 2 marinas close to El Mojon, one on The Mediterranean Sea and the second on the Mar Menor Sea, both within walking distance or a short drive.

El Mojon really is one of those locations where it is possible to live WITHOUT having to own a car!
