My wife and I created a successful business in the UK that we had for 12 years which gave us an enviable lifestyle, a large country house, and for me a lifelong dream of owning a brand new Jaguar car – we even had a boat in The Med! I had a wonderful, beautiful wife who was my whole world. We had no privileged upbringing but we worked really hard and we bettered ourselves, and we bought our first holiday home in Spain in 2001, this wonderful property became our spiritual home. But even with our successes life in the UK was hard. High taxes, high utility and Council Tax bills, high crime yet low levels of policing and a proliferation of ‘spy’ cameras, thugs and loutishness behaviour, no sense of civic pride or morals, the NHS falling apart and a tangible feeling of fear prevailed not only when the pubs closed, but also when just out shopping. So we sold everything and started the move to Spain. Unfortunately my Darling wife died in my arms Christmas 2004 before we got here, but I promised her that I’d strive to live the dream we had envisaged, I even promised to 'be happy again' so I sold up and moved to Spain. In the years since my life has been a real roller-coaster in more ways than one! On the positive side I have bought ‘boys toys’; I've bought more properties, and I’ve enjoyed some fantastic holidays including transatlantic crossing, I have travelled throughout Europe, to the Middle East, to the Caribbean, the USA and even to China yet Spain has throughout remained my real home. It has that 'certain something' that regardless of where I am in the world pulls me back to Spain everytime. .jpg) I enjoy my Spanish life. I live most of my life outdoors in over 320 days of sunshine a year and I enjoy the good life. For example a meal for two at a stylish restaurant of good food, a bottle of wine, a bottle of water and coffees costs €27 (about £23). And one can walk about afterwards in safety without the fear of loutish behaviour. In fact whole Spanish families walk about long after dark here, children play in the streets; laughter and not yobbish yelling fills the air. I enjoy the low cost of living here – on my luxury architect designed detached villa with private swimming pool on a 5 star resort I pay €944 in ‘council tax’ (£820 per year) at 2009 prices. The council tax on my last house in the UK was £1,853 and that was at 2004 prices! In the UK the rubbish is collected now what, every 2 weeks? Here it is collected every day! In the UK the police seemed almost invisible (especially when they are hiding in the bushes with speed cameras!), yet here we have on-site security and they drive past my villa every hour! Here the road outside my villa is swept every day; and my front garden and all the palm tree community gardens are attended to by the gardener, whose pay is included in the ‘council tax’. Petrol is 33% cheaper; the food is mostly organic, much cheaper and so fresh. The health care system is good, and it works, I know, I’ve used it. I like the low levels of crime in Spain, the high sense of morals and family values … and living in the sun!
I have a great life here in Spain. I am fitter and slimmer (apart from that infuriating bit around the middle that seems to re-appear each time I breath out or I catch a glimpse of myself in the mirror!) I speak a little Spanish (but badly!) I play the saxophone (very badly!), I have good loyal friends, I socialise and eat out much more than ever was possible back in the UK. I go to the beach, and go out even if it’s just for a coffee every day, eat a fair bit of Tapas, and in general have a far better quality of life here than in the UK. I especially enjoy the Festivals here and I have even converted to Catholicism whilst in Spain. Spain is my home. Maybe it could be yours too? But if not maybe you would like a holiday home here? That smile on my wife's face that lit up her whole face with her eyes twinkling when she signed the purchase contract, that pure joy is what I want to see in your eyes. It is this that gives me my buzz. THAT is why I am in this business. I do not sell houses, I sell dreams! I am not in the property business; I’m in the people business.
